Good news for all of us from the Pacific ocean and that awful Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an three times the size of France of thrown away plastic that’s slowly breaking down and polluting the entire world.
Say hello, once again, to Boyan Slat, the Dutch wonderboy whom I’ve written about so many times over the past years. He’s the kid who had the idea to do what scientists said was impossible and clean up the un-clean-up-able. He started a non-profit organisation, Ocean Cleanup and has been designing generation after generation of mid ocean rubbish catching systems, each one of which I’ve reported on here, but the latest one comes with a huge boost. $25 million donated by one of the co-founders of Airbnb, Joe Gebbia. Boyan’s team have removed over 200,000 kilos so far and Joe is hoping his whopping donation will inspire other to do the same. His donation allows Ocean Cleanup to operate a vast capture area one and a half miles across, and a three-vessel team that are able to operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We all love a good buried treasure story and the current best one in the world is from right here in the UK.
Say hello to Charlie Clark, a café owner from Birmingham, who’d only been metal detecting for just six months when he found what the British Museum are calling a find of several lifetimes. Charlie has unearthed a genuine Tudor gold pendant that was in all likelihood made as a present from Henry VIII to his wife Catherine Of Aragon. The solid 24 carat gold, heart shaped pendant found in a field in Warwickshire has the British Museum jumping from one foot to the other:
“In the British Museum, we’ve got the largest collection of objects from the early Tudor periods in precious metal; none of them are anything like this.”
Have a look for yourself!
