The London townhouse where some of telly’s most iconic characters were created has gone on the market.

If you ever fancied walking through the historic halls of legendary writer Spike Milligan’s base in Bayswater, then you’re in luck, as the three-storey building is up for sale for a cool £6.5 million.

The Victorian townhouse on Orne Court was bought by Milligan and Eric Sykes in 1962, and served as the HQ of Associated London Scripts, a co-op for comedy writers, including Milligan, Sykes, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.

The 5,697 square foot home became a hub for those in the industry looking for a home for their creative juices, with many script-writers and comedy figures stopping at the hallowed halls.

Built in the 1890s, the now-famous townhouse was where Terry Nation wrote his 1963 script for Doctor Who and The Daleks, while Dennis Spooner came up with stories for Thunderbirds and Stingray.

Milligan lived in the home too, which is currently being sold by the family of Sykes, who worked there until his death in 2012.

The Bayswater property is listed under joint agents, Beauchamp Estates and Carter Jonas, with the current office layout ready to be turned to a six-bedroom family home without the need for planning permission.

As well as the incredible history within the walls of Orne Court, other tantalising features include high ceilings, Dutch gables, a first floor balcony and entrance canopy. The house also boasts two Blue Plaques celebrating both Spike and Eric.

Gary Hersham, founding director of Beauchamp Estates said (via Evening Standard): “This famous property would make an outstanding London townhouse on the doorstep of Kensington Gardens, perfect for comedy and Dr Who fans alike.”

Tim Macpherson, head of residential sales at Carter Jonas, added (via Yahoo News):  “On the doorstep of Kensington Gardens and Queensway, undergoing regeneration into Bayswater village, 9 Orme Court is in a prime location that has become one of the most sought after up-and-coming places to live in the capital.

“As a single house this property provides a superb investment opportunity for a discerning private buyer or commercial developer.”
