Comedian Chris McCausland joined Ricky Wilson on Virgin Radio’s Drivetime to chat about his new Channel 4 show, Wonders of the World I Can't See.
In the series, the funnyman visits the world's most stunning places and, being blind, he's joined by celebrity guests who give him commentary. He told Ricky: “It’s a travel show, because there's not enough of them on the telly at the moment!”
He continued: “Basically, the point of the show is, what's the point in going to the places where people go to look at the big thing that everyone goes to look at, if you can't see it? And if someone's going to describe it to you, you might as well do it from a photo, mightn’t you?”
Talking about his celebrity guests in the series, Chris explained: “I’ve done Greece with Harry Hill - The Acropolis, The Colosseum in Rome with Tom Allen, Jordan with Guz Khan and Niagara Falls with Liza Tarbuck.
“It's kind of, can they prove to me that it was worth getting off my behind and going to these places?”
The stand-up added: “It's a comedy show. It's entertaining. And we've tried to be honest as well. I'm not just pretending that everything was worthwhile. Some of the stuff was pointless!
“We were looking at The Acropolis and Harry Hill’s trying to describe that it's like pillars around the sides with no sides. And I'm like, ‘Well, it sounds like a gazebo, mate’.”
Chris and his pals don’t just visit iconic sites, but take on other activities too. He said: “We did some Greek theatre and pottery making and some Olympic stuff. It’s us being a bit daft and being a bit silly.
“I got to have fun with Harry Hill, which was a phenomenal experience really.”
During their chat about TV programmes, Ricky admitted that he wasn’t a fan of car shows and that he wants “someone that doesn't like cars to show me what car I should be getting, because I don't understand it.” After this, Chris pitched an idea, saying: “We've got a new idea for my next TV show, haven't we? Where you don't like the car shows, how they’re always done by experts using lingo you don't understand.... so, it's going to be me test driving cars, and I'm going to be talking to you in language you understand, like, ‘It's got a good wiggle stick in the middle’. And we'll see if we can get round the track without me destroying the car!”
Speaking about using audio description when watching TV shows and films, Chris said: “It's good that it exists, but it tells you way too much. You wish it would shut up sometimes. You know, it tells you, like, ‘He's got a green T-shirt on’. You're like, ‘Do I need to know?’."
He added: “I like a bit of horror sometimes, and because they have to fit it into the gaps when there's no dialogue, sometimes they'll tell you the jump bit before it's happened.
“Someone will be getting chased and they'll say, ‘He jumps out from behind the wall with a knife’. And then, three seconds later, he jumps out.”
Wonders of the World I Can't See continues on Monday on Channel 4 at 10pm. Stream the series now on Channel 4 on-demand.
