Line of Duty star Martin Compston is back and using his native Scottish accent for the brand new Amazon Prime series, The Rig.

The drama is a mystery thriller following the crew of an oil rig off the Scottish coast as they fight for survival after a strange fog cuts off all communication with the shore, and leaves them stranded in the fierce waves.

As tensions and paranoia rise, the rig’s systems fail, and a devastating accident brings them all face-to-face with the deadly dangers of one of the most extreme working environments on the planet.

The Rig is the first Amazon Original to be filmed entirely in Scotland, and for Greenock native Martin, who plays communications officer Fulmer Hamilton, it was a relief to be able to speak in his usual tongue.

Speaking to FM104, Martin, who famously had an English accent as Steve Arnott in Line of Duty, explained: “When you can use your own voice or the TV version of my voice, then it's one less thing to worry about.”

“I've been delighted the way Amazon has kind of put Scotland at the forefront of this. They’re not shying away from the fact that they've invested a lot of money there and the show in Edinburgh, the first premiere was up in Edinburgh, so I've been delighted with that.”

For Martin, it seems some Irish accents might be in his future, as he teased that he’s “terrified” of trying out a new twang entirely.

He continued: “I might be playing Irish next year, or the year behind, and it's terrifying me because I think, especially with an Irish accent, it’s really hard for somebody outside to do it. It’s people's lives and stuff, but that can be great, like a costume, because if you did an accent and you do that voice, you can find the character very quickly.”

Elsewhere, Martin recently responded to the rumours Line of Duty will be getting a highly-anticipated series seven.

It's been in excess of a year since fans last saw stars Compston, Vicky McClure and Aidan Dunbar working together on the BBC drama, written by Jed Mercurio, with the sixth series of the police procedural coming to an end in May 2021.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain in December, The Nest star revealed that the main cast members are all on the same page about returning.

"Look, nothing’s changed," said the Scottish actor. "I’m really chuffed, we’re all delighted people still want us back. That conversation, we had a really honest one whether we were all up for doing it again, and I believe we all are."

The Rig is out on Amazon Prime from Friday 6th January.
