Taika Waititi’s hilarious series Our Flag Means Death is finally heading to the UK - but where can you watch it?

After almost a year since its initial US release on HBO Max, the pirate comedy is finally landing on these shores.

Our Flag Means Death follows Flight of the Conchords’s Rhys Darby as a wealthy landowner-turned-pirate, Stede Bonnet.

He is on a mission to become a ‘gentleman pirate’ so takes over control of a ship called The Revenge, and hires the rag-tag crew to help him.

Stede initially struggles to get the crew to respect him, but Blackbeard (Waititi) soon takes an interest, and the lives of those on board the Revenge change forever.

The story is loosely based on the real-life Stede Bonnet, who abandoned his comfortable life to prove himself as a hardened pirate in the ‘Golden Age of Piracy’.

Taika is not only starring in the show as villainous Blackbeard, but he also serves as executive producer, and directed the very first episode.

Alongside him on the high seas include Leslie Jones, Fred Armisen and Trainspotting star Ewen Bremner, as well as Bloods actor Samson Kayo and Man Like Mobeen’s Guz Khan.

Rory Kinnear plays double-trouble in the show, as British naval captain Nigel Badminton, and his twin brother Admiral Chauncey Badminton.

With fans and critics alike raving about the series, it’s no surprise to hear that BBC have laid claim to OFMD, and the series will air on BBC Two at 10pm, with all 10 episodes available to watch BBC iPlayer from today (Wednesday 4th January).

Upon its release in the US, Our Flag Means Death was praised for its LGBTQ+ representation, and was soon renewed for a second series.

Showrunner David Jenkins recently told The Hollywood Reporter that no one else could possibly fit the role of menacing Blackbeard other than Taika.

He said: “Our Blackbeard is a legend, a lover, a fighter, a tactical genius, a poetic soul, and quite possibly insane.

“Only one man could play this role, and that is the great Taika Waititi. We're thrilled beyond measure he's decided to don the beard."

Our Flag Means Death begins at 10pm on BBC Two tonight (Wednesday 3rd January) with all episodes available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
