Many Derry Girls fans were given the moment they had all been waiting for when they watched the latest episode last night.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
After the gang spends a particularly creepy night in a weird old house and James faces a ‘near-death experience’, he decides now is the perfect time to tell Erin something he has always wanted her to know…he has feelings for her.
The pair end up sharing a kiss until they are interrupted by James’ cousin Michelle who warns them they cannot get together.
In the end, they decide not to act on their feelings for each other much to the despair of many Derry Girls fans.
Now, creator and writer of the hit Channel 4 show, Lisa McGee, has opened up about why she wanted to include that scene in the final series.
Speaking to Digital Spy, she said: "I was sort of with the fans that didn't want it [the kiss] because I mean, I always worry that it just gets less interesting the minute it happens.
"Then I kind of started thinking 'is there a way I could have my cake and eat it?' So we just had Michelle call time on it immediately. So it never develops beyond that at this point.
"It might in the future, but I just started thinking it would be quite nice if we saw their first kiss because this is the last series."
Fans of the show have been rooting for the characters to get together since season two when James takes Erin to prom.
McGee added: “I always knew James liked her, because I always thought ‘there’s another reason he’s putting up with all this stuff!’”
The writer continued that it had always been in the back of her mind to get them together but after casting the characters and starting the first series, the pair felt more like friends.
She also wanted the focus to be around a boy being friends with girls because that’s not something that has been explored much in the media.
McGee went on: “Then I started thinking if we kicked off that romance too early, the show will become about that rather than the friends going through these times together, and this political backdrop. So, I changed my mind."
Of course, fans of the show had a lot to say on social media after watching the pair finally get together.
Many took to Twitter to share their excitement, with one user writing: “OMG!!! James and Erin are this generation’s Scott and Charlene. #DerryGirls”.
Another said: “i totally called the james and erin from episode 4 in series 1 where james was trying to get off with katya and erin was SO jealous #DerryGirls”.
A third wrote: “You mean to tell me the writers teased us with Erin and James for 3 whole seasons just for Erin to say Michelle is right and to end it before it started? Devastated. #derrygirls.”
This comes after the writer confirmed that next week's episode of Derry Girls would include a flashback of Ma Mary and Aunt Sarah when they were in school during the 70s.
Derry Girls continues Tuesday at 9pm on Channel 4.
