Line of Duty fans have been tuning in to new drama DI Ray, which is produced by LoD’s Jed Mercurio, and last night’s second episode of the ITV show has left them shocked.

In case you aren’t aware of the show, it stars Parminder Nagra, who you will remember as the protagonist in Bend it Like Beckham. She plays Detective Inspector Rachita Ray, who is promoted to investigate a “Culturally Specific Homicide” in Birmingham. She soon begins to suspect, however, that she's been brought onto the case because of her ethnicity rather than her ability, and she starts to question the motivations of her superiors.

There are spoilers ahead.

The second of four episodes of DI Ray aired last night (May 3rd), and ended with a big twist. As the latest instalment drew to a close, DI Ray was tipped off that the victim, Imran, had been transporting something into the UK in order to free his family from debt.

The assumption was that it would have been drugs, but it turned out that there was something rather more gruesome in the shipment container. When it was opened, a dozen corpses were discovered inside, along with one near-death survivor.

The shock discovery forces DI Ray's boss, DCI Kerry Henderson (played by Gemma Whelan from Game of Thrones), to acknowledge that Imran’s death wasn’t the honour killing it was assumed to be, but rather an incident revolving around a major trafficking ring.

Viewers took to social media to react to the twist. One wrote: “I expected firearms or drugs to be found, not a case of Human Trafficking.”

Someone else added: “Brilliant drama. Didn't expect that ending.”

Another Twitter user suspects there is more to DI Ray’s boss than meets the eye. “What’s Henderson’s game, eh?” they asked.

Others took to social media to praise the show in general, as well as Parminder Nagra’s performance. One person, for instance, wrote: “Loving #DIRay already! @parmindernagra is brilliant!”

DI Ray resumes with episode three tonight (May 4th) at 9pm on ITV.
