The Oscar-winning film CODA will be getting a re-release in cinemas this month, giving audiences the chance to see it on the big screen once more, and this time, with captions.

After making history as the first film with a predominantly d/Deaf cast to win Best Picture, the film will be returning to cinemas in the UK from 8 April, and all screenings will include subtitles.

BFI Distribution has taken 46 bookings already after previously overseeing a limited theatrical release of the film back in August 2021.

The film, directed by Siân Heder, is also available to watch on Apple TV+.

CODA follows the story of Ruby, a 17-year-old girl who is the only hearing person in a deaf family from Gloucester, Massachusetts. One day she discovers she has a singing talent after joining her high school’s choir club and has to make a choice of whether to continue supporting her family or following her dreams.

Following its release in 2021, CODA has received a lot of praise for its inclusivity.

After debuting at the online Sundance 2021, the film went on to win four prizes including the US Dramatic Grand Jury Prize.

On top of that, CODA then won three Oscars at the Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.

It also became the first original movie from a streaming service to win an Oscar and broke history by casting d/Deaf actors to play the d/Deaf characters in a movie.

Its nomination for Best Picture, along with Power of the Dog by Jane Campion, also made a record as only the third time in history that two films directed by women were nominated for the award at the same time.

The story of CODA made such an impact that there are now plans to turn it into a musical in collaboration with the Deaf West Theatre.

CODA is now available to watch on Apple TV+.
