It’s been 21 years since Spy Kids first hit the big screen, and now Netflix are bringing back the crime-fighting family for a new generation.
The streaming service has just announced they are teaming up with the franchise’s original director, Robert Rodriguez, to introduce a new family of spies to the world.
The famous filmmaker will also write and produce the film, but very little is known about the plot or cast as of yet.
Netflix shared the exciting news on Twitter, saying: “Spy Kids was released March 30, 2001. So the 21st anniversary of the beloved action comedy feels like the perfect time to reveal that Robert @Rodriguez will write, direct, and produce a reimagining of the beloved franchise and introduce the world to a new family of spies.”
Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara played siblings Carmen and Juni Cortez in the original films, which centred on the kids getting in the middle of their spy parent’s missions.
Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino played mum and dad Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez.
It’s not yet known who will star as the new spy family, but fans are wondering if Daryl and Alexa will return for a little cameo, or whether it will centre on either of their own families now they’re all grown up.
The first Spy Kids film was influenced by the likes of James Bond, and was a surprise hit at the box office, earning $35.2 million internationally. It also holds a 93% rating on movie critic site Rotten Tomatoes.
The last Spy Kids film to hit the silver screen was Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, which introduced Jessica Alba and Joel McHale to the franchise back in 2011.
