Netflix has unveiled an impressive trailer for the eagerly awaited nature documentary series, Life on Our Planet, narrated by Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman.

The eight-episode series, executive produced by Steven Spielberg, delves into life's struggle for survival on Earth, chronicling the rise and fall of various species.

The trailer teases an intriguing narrative, emphasising the immense diversity of life on our planet.

It begins with captivating generated footage of a Tyrannosaurus Rex preying on a Triceratops, showcasing state-of-the-art visual effects. The series intends to breathe life back into long-extinct creatures like dinosaurs, woolly mammoths, and sabre-toothed predators.

“Today there are 20 million species on our planet, yet what we see is just a snapshot in time – 99 per cent of earth’s inhabitants are lost to our deep past,” reads the series synopsis.

Freeman's narration guides viewers through the dramatic battles for survival, featuring an array of creatures, from sharks and cheetahs to komodo dragons and squids.

“This is the story of the great battles of survival – and the dynasties that would take over the world,” says Morgan Freeman, who previously narrated the hit 2005 nature documentary March of the Penguins, says in a voiceover.

The storyline encapsulates life's journey, spanning from the beginning of existence to the present day.

An important element of the series is its dramatisation of five global extinction events, shedding light on the evolutionary winners and losers.

The project is produced by Spielberg and the Emmy award-winning team behind David Attenborough’s Our Planet, holds promise for both nature enthusiasts and fans of high-quality documentary filmmaking.

Life on Our Planet is set to provide a breathtaking and educational experience, offering a deep dive into the intricate and often awe-inspiring world of life on Earth.

In an interview with the publication last week, producer Alastair Fothergill, a veteran nature documentarian best known for the 2001 series The Blue Planet, said of the forthcoming series: “It’s really important to say that extinction events shouldn’t necessarily be considered as disasters.

“They are clearly disasters for those animals who go extinct in the process, but in the history of evolution of life, there are winners and losers.”

With the narrative guided by Freeman's iconic voice and the production expertise of Spielberg and his team, the series is anticipated to make a significant impact in the realm of nature documentaries.

Life on Our Planet comprises eight 60-minute episodes and will be available to stream on Netflix on 25 October.
