Not many people can say they've broken up thousands of relationships through the power of their opinion - unless your name's Daniel Sloss. The ranting funnyman joined the Graham Norton Radio Show with Waitrose to talk about his new book, his potty-mouthed Netflix special and spying on Trump.
He told Graham about his new literary offering, Everyone You Hate Is Going to Die: "I still picture it as a self help book and I maintain it's a very positive message unless you're Buddhist, in which case you’ve got inner peace so congrats on that. But for the rest of us, your enemies dying is objectively a good thing. People say success is the ultimate form of revenge and I don't think it is. I think it's reading their name in the obituary. I think that is my goal."
On the success of his show, Jigsaw, on Netflix, which broke up thousands of couples, he said: "It went sort of cult because it was originally just meant to be this love letter to single people to say there's nothing wrong with taking time and being selfish and working out who you are before you force yourself into a relationship. I just wrote it because I'd gotten out of a toxic relationship and the relief I felt was palpable.
"And I was like, I want to share this with all the other people not in good relationships. Obviously, I've never broken up anyone happy in my life. It’s rarely mentioned but it's also led to about 1,000 engagements and I know there's at least five children that have been born but that's not as funny."
Should you go and watch his live tour? He explained: "The thing I always say to people is, especially if you've never heard of me before, please go and watch my Netflix special and if it's not for you, man, I totally get that. Comedy is subjective. If it's not for you, please do not waste your money or my time by coming to my show or reading my work that you're not gonna enjoy."
Don't bother sending him hate messages either. He said: “I'm not really on social media, my mum does my Facebook and my agent does my Twitter, like, I just don't care. So if you're sending horrible messages on Twitter, please understand you're just upsetting my mother. That's all that's happening."
On watching Trump get sworn in, he said: “Not because I support Trump but we thought he was gonna get shot. I was like, if any presidents are going to get shot, it's gonna be Trump and I don't agree with somebody being shot but, you know, I wanted to be part of history. So of course, we go down there and they check our bags for guns and everything.
"I've been told by the media the old Trump supporters are racist bigots and I absolutely saw several thousand of those people but then I also wanted to talk to people who were on the other side of the political spectrum and try and understand where they were coming from.
"There was one African American man who was selling Make America Great hats which were made in China, which is phenomenal and I was like, I have to ask you, do you actually support Donald Trump? And he was, like, No, I'm just here making money off of idiots. So I gave him 50 bucks because I'm an idiot.”
Everyone You Hate Is Going to Die is out now.
