Jennifer Saunders in Blithe Spirit

Jennifer joined the Graham Norton Radio Show with Waitrose to chat about returning to the stage for the West End production of Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit.

She spoke to Graham fresh off two performances of the play the previous day at the Harold Pinter theatre to chat about continuing the run of shows post-pandemic.

"I do love this role and we were sort of cut short in the West End for the first lockdown, and so we've come back to finish off the run really! I do love it, it's a gift for a woman of a certain age, shall I say, and I get to not be at all vain. You can put as big as eyebrows as you like on, and a small moustache now I've added, so it's a complete joy really for me" she laughed.

Jennifer plays the role of Madame Arcati, an eccentric clairvoyant who is hired by novelist Charles Condomine and conjures up a ghost of his first wife, who is determined to sabotage his current marriage.

"It was written by Noël Coward at the beginning of the war and it was basically written to entertain people. He decided he was going to write a great song, a great play and a great film and this was the play he wrote.

"It's about a man who makes the mistake of having a séance in his house, conducted by Madame Arcati, and he thinks he's doing it as a sort of joke to get material, and what happens is his past comes back to haunt him. In fact, his present haunts him at the same time, so it's a bit of a romp really and it's a terribly funny play!"
