The co-founder and original bassist of seminal punk band the Sex Pistols has signed a deal with The Universal Music Group, to release a new album this year.

As well as this meaning that there’ll be a new Glen Matlock record in 2022, the agreement will see UMG’s catalogue division release several of the musician's previous solo albums.

Matlock has released six solo records so far, the most recent being Good To Go, which landed in 2018. Of the deal that he has just signed, the artist said in a statement: “I am over the moon to have now signed to Universal Music Group, who will be releasing my brand spanking new album, and I can’t wait to get cracking with the team.”

He added: “Watch this space”.

As well as having a new album in the works, the artist has a couple of live shows lined-up. He will play West Hampstead Arts Club in London on 10th March, as well as the Cornwall Punk Festival ten days later.

Glen Matlock co-founded the Sex Pistols in 1975, before leaving the band in 1977. He is credited as a songwriter on 10 of the 12 songs on their only album.

The band has been in the news over the past few months, after it was announced that Danny Boyle would be making a six-part Sex Pistols biopic series, Pistol, which will be shown on Disney+.

Frontman John Lydon had refused to give permission for the band’s music to be used in the series, causing guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook to successfully sue Lydon. The legal objection ended up in the High Court.

Pistol, which does not yet have a release date, is based on Jones’ memoir Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol. It will star Toby Wallace, Anson Boon, Jacob Slater, and Christian Lees, along with Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams, Thomas Brodie-Sangster from The Queen’s Gambit, and Westworld’s Talulah Riley.

In an interview last year, Lydon described being in the Sex Pistols as “mostly hell on earth.”
