The musician joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky to talk about his second solo album, No Love Songs For Laura, and to play a brilliant live session.
No Love Songs For Laura is out on Friday 9th July, and Kyle told Chris that his new material is a little different from his work with The View, who have been on hiatus since 2017. “That’s the stuff I want to sing and the stuff I want to write, so I just wanted to do it without any judgement. You know what I mean? It’s just lighthearted, and feels good.”
Kyle played an amazing live session, performing songs from his upcoming solo LP, including Stress Ball and Rake It In, as well as a stunning cover of Lewis Capaldi’s massive single, Someone You Loved.
The Scottish singer also performed his latest single, Wait Around, which is out now. Chris asked Kyle about the official video for the song, which sees him busting some dance moves. Kyle laughed, “Yeah I was just trying to come up with something that would make me really uncomfortable! Honestly, I rehearsed for, like, seven weeks and I was getting proper good at dancing as well.”
Explaining the video’s premise, he told Chris, “I’m trying to impress this girl who is going to leave me unless I change my ways, that kind of the thing.
“She joins in the dance and is like, ‘Oh you can dance the same as me. I can dance, we can both dance. We are meant to be together!’”
Recording the video for Wait Around was not without its issues though, as Kyle explained. “When we went to video the dance, it was supposed to be on flat ground, but we did it on sand dunes, so it really mucked up my whole dance!”
Kyle and producer Frankie Siragusa spent last August in a new studio in The Libertines’ newly opened Albion Rooms hotel and arts space in Margate. They played all of the instruments that feature on the final album. “It was all getting done up when I was there, so I got a good price! It was madness,” Kyle told Chris.
Despite the Albion rooms being somewhat chaotic at the time, Kyle enjoyed the Margate vibe. “It was cool, man. You open your door to the beach every day and are like, ‘Oh wow this is just beautiful,’ and it was quite hard to go back to the studio, because it’s so beautiful in Margate.”
He added, “There is something there. There is something bohemian about it. It’s beautiful, man.”
The album’s title, No Love Songs For Laura, came from a conversation between Kyle and his fiancée, Laura Wilde, even though there is in fact a song on the album called Laura. “The song Laura is not really a love song,” the singer explained. “It’s a strange one. So she was like, ‘No love song for me anymore? What’s going on?’ And I was like, ‘No love songs for Laura.’"
No Love Songs For Laura is out on Friday 9th July. The album can be pre-ordered here.
