This is one hell of a tasty toastie — and price tag. The globe's priciest sandwich is back on the menu at a New York restaurant in honour of National Grilled Cheese Day. If you fancy forking out, it will set you back an eye-watering $214 (£171) and has to be ordered 48 hours in advance.

Opulent NYC eatery Serendipity 3 is famous for its incredibly luxe creations including the world's most expensive French fries and the most expensive milkshake. They announced the Guinness World Record-breaking sandwich is back on the menu for a limited time to mark the special day.

Born in 2014, the Quintessential Grilled Cheese features French pullman champagne bread, made with Dom Perignon Champagne and is covered in grass-fed white truffle butter before. It's filled with slices of Caciocavallo Podolico cheese and then toasted until golden. The edges are gilded in 23-karat edible gold and is served with a side of South African Lobster Tomato Bisque.

The food gurus wrote on social media: "We are bringing back yet another Guinness World-winning dish for a limited-time only. This National Grilled Cheese Day (April 12th), S3 in New York will be offering The Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich, which achieved The Guinness World Record for the most expensive sandwich in the world, priced at $214.

"The Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich starts with two thick slices of French Pullman Champagne Bread made with Dom Perignon Champagne and 23k edible gold flakes, buttered with grass-fed white truffle butter. The sandwich is filled with thick slices of rare Caciocavallo Podolico Cheese, made in Southern Italy from the milk of the Podolica cow, who graze free-range, feeding on strongly aromatic grasses such as fennel, licorice, juniper, laurel bay and wilder strawberries, infusing the milk with these sweet aromatic perfumes.

"There are only about 25,000 of these special cows and they only lactate during May and June, making this cheese one of the finest and rarest in the world. The sandwich is then toasted until golden crisp and cut into triangles, the edges of the sandwich gilded in 23k edible gold.

"The sandwich is served on a Baccarat crystal plate with a Baccarat glass filled with South African Lobster Tomato Bisque as a dipping sauce, swirled with crème fraîche and truffle oil. This bisque is made with South African Losbet Trails - known as the best in the world, along with San Marzano tomatoes from Italy.

"A 48-hour advance notice is required to order this delicious over-the-top sandwich."
