Hollywood star Keanu Reeves recently had a microbe-killing molecule named in his honour, and he has now responded.
Earlier this year, Germany’s Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology created a new molecule which is able to kill plant fungal diseases and human-pathogenic fungi without harming their cells.
This could potentially be an environmentally-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides.
And its name? Keanumycins!
Researcher Sebastian Götze said (via The Independent): “The lipopeptides kill so efficiently that we named them after Keanu Reeves because he, too, is extremely deadly in his roles.”
Earlier this week, Keanu took on an “Ask Me Anything” thread on Reddit, where he addressed the naming of the molecule. “They should’ve called it John Wick… but that’s pretty cool… and surreal for me,” he said.
The actor added: “But thanks, scientist people! Good luck, and thank you for helping us.”
Fans will be able to see the Keanu in killing mode later this month, as John Wick: Chapter 4 hits the cinema. The star was in London on Monday (6th March) for the movie’s UK premiere, where he spoke to virginradio.co.uk and other press from the red carpet.
Explaining how he gets into a John Wick mindset, he said: “I mean, there's the training of it, so just kind of come up to the mat, give yourself the cross and go to work. And then filming, just put the suit on, put shoes on, get the tie right, put the watch on, gear up”.

Meanwhile, also from the red carpet, director Chad Stahelski likened Keanu Reeves to Gene Kelly in what he described as "musical" fight scenes. Read all about it.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is set to arrive in cinemas on 24th March, 2023.
