It's not often people hold their hands up freely to nepotism, but Amanda Abbington has said that she 'only got the role in Sherlock' because she was with the star of the show, Dr John Watson's Martin Freeman. The talented pair were together for 16 years and have two children.

The Office actor was in the hit TV show from 2010 alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, while Abbington joined the cast as Mary Watson in 2014.

Speaking on the Full Disclosure podcast with presenter and best-selling author James O'Brien, Abbington said: “I was with Martin at the time, there was a lot of nepotism being banded around. It's true, it was that.

"Both Mark and Steven (the show’s creators and writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat) said, look, we were trying to work out who would be the best person to play Mary, John Watson's wife, and we thought it would be the person who was going out with him.”

“So it makes sense. And we had worked together on many things. I think we had worked together four or five times before that."

On the natural casting, she said: "I was over the moon because I loved that show."

The star also shared that she had auditioned for Season 2 of The Office to play the role of Rachel – Tim's (played by Freeman) girlfriend – but didn't nail it.

Her latest show The Unfriend is at London's West End Criterion Theatre until April 16.

Here's Amanda telling Chris Evans about her new ‘really poignant, very funny’ sitcom The Family Pile.
