Dan Walker has given fans a health update following his frightening collision with a car while on his bike. The news presenter has said that he has started eating solid food again and is on the mend.

The star, who says he 'feels lucky to be alive' was left eating soup through a straw but is making progress and has urged people to wear a helmet while cycling.

Posting pictures alongside his dog on Instagram, the former BBC Breakfast host said: "Winnie hasn’t left my side this week. She’s the best.

"Two things happened today…

"1. I had my first solid food since Monday.

"2. I ordered a new cycling helmet.

"The swelling is going down but the body is still aching."

The TV star shared a funny get well soon video from Comic Relief co-creator, Richard Curtis, who sent him a video message saying: "I’m so sorry about the state of your face.

"I just wanted to day there is an easier way to get a Red Nose. I really admire your dedication but if you just go on Amazon there is a beautiful red nose designed by Sir Jony Ive, makes money for Comic Relief and much less painful.

"I hope you recover soon and order a Red Nose with panache."

Dan told fans earlier in the week about his injuries and wrote on Instagram: "Battered and bruised but - amazingly - nothing broken.

"Very thankful to still be here. I have no memory of anything and just remember coming round on the tarmac with paramedics & police around me.

“The helmet I was wearing saved my life today so - if you’re on a bike - get one on your head. Smashed my watch & phone, ruined my trousers, my bike is a mess but I’m still here.”
