Kaiser Chiefs star Ricky Wilson is joining Virgin Radio as drivetime presenter, but how much do you know about him?

From scoring number one singles and albums and selling out arenas, to joining the likes of Chris Evans and Graham Norton to keep you entertained on the radio.

The date for your diary is Monday 9th January 2023, and you can hear Ricky every Monday to Friday, 4pm to 7pm.

Ricky has had an incredible career to date with his band and presenting, and recently released a single called How 2 Dance.

Best known for his work as the frontman of the Kaiser Chiefs, the band formed in 2000 under the name Parva, before changing to their current name in 2003. They shot to fame with debut album Employment in 2005, which claimed the number 2 spot and went five-times platinum.

The album was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, and the Kaiser Chiefs won a BRIT Award for Best British Group, British Rock Act and British Live act, as well as an NME Award for Best Album.

They also won an Ivor Novello for the album, and many other awards and accolades.

The band released a string of top ten singles, including a smash-hit number one with Ruby in 2007.

Their follow up album, Yours Truly, Angry Mob went straight to number one in the album charts

A fifth album, Education, Education, Education & War also went to number one, and the band have released seven studio albums to date.

Sold out arena tours, festivals and gigs around the world soon followed, with Ricky joking that performing onstage and talking on the radio gives him the same buzz.

As well as fronting the band, Ricky also moved into presenting with stints in radio and being a judge and coach on The Voice.  He was the winning coach for the fourth and fifth series of the show, making him the being the only coach to win for two years in a row.

He also co-presented Britain’s Best Young Artist, as he has a Master's degree in Art and Design and taught art at the Leeds College of Art and Design before the band got their big break.

So how will Ricky be preparing for his show?: “Mobile phone notes, that's where it starts every day. See something stupid? Write it down. When I get in, I always arrive an hour and a half early. Write them all down on a piece of A4. Then lose it. You don't need it once the floodgates are open, and you start the show. It becomes like a tumbling thing.”

He's already making plans for his show, and here's what you can expect: “I’m going to play lots of music, I really like the playlist on here. I think it's great. It really is conducive to having a good time driving home. I’ll play a lot of Kaiser Chiefs, we've got one out there now. It's pretty good.”

In a statement, Ricky revealed: “I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to getting started on Virgin Radio. Music is the number one passion, but I’m so excited about having some fun in a playful and creative space for drive time.

Ricky Wilson presents the weekday drivetime show (4pm-7pm) on Virgin Radio UK from 9th January 2023.
