Welsh comic Rhod Gilbert is feeling “happy and optimistic” after receiving cancer treatment.

The comedian was diagnosed with stage four cancer in May.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales, Gilbert recalled lumps “popping up in places they shouldn’t be” whilst he was in Cuba raising money for Cardiff’s Velindre Cancer Centre.

“I came home from a fundraising trek for Velindre as a patron… and pretty much went in as a patient.

“You have to laugh at this stuff, let’s face it. I was sitting there having chemo and there’s pictures of me on the wall as a patron. You couldn’t make it up.”

The 54-year-old started struggling with symptoms in April after recording his most recent show, ‘The Book of John’. “I had terribly sore throats, tightness through my neck. I was having to cancel shows because I couldn’t speak.”

Remaining hopeful for the future, Gilbert revealed: “I won’t know if any of my treatment has worked for a few more months, but I’m feeling good. I’m feeling happy and optimistic.

“I feel like I’m recovering day by day and we’ll see what happens.”

He added: “I’m hoping that 2023 is a better year and I can get back to work and get out there and start having fun again.”

The comedian is also eager to “redouble” his fundraising efforts for Velindre Cancer Centre. Next October, he aims to raise money for them by leading a fundraising walk in Morocco.

Praising the centre for their “outstanding” level of care, Gilbert said: “I can’t imagine there is a better place in the world to be treated.”

It’s not only the staff at Velindre that have supported Gilbert recently. His comedian friends have also taken to social media to help promote his new DVD, ‘The Book of John’.

Jimmy Carr promoted the show on Twitter. He said: “I’ve got a new DVD - not one I’m in one I’ve bought - it’s by my mate Rhod Gilbert and it’s bloody funny. (if you’ve got technology from 10 years ago knocking around the house get the DVD - if not download it like a normal person).”

Jason Manford has also tweeted about the DVD. “Grab #RhodGilbert’s new stand up show now! Ready for download, you could be watching it and laughing in five minutes.”

Fellow Welsh comic Rob Brydon posted a funny hostage style video advertising the show, in which he states Gilbert is “the greatest Welsh comedian”, before holding up a sign asking for help.

‘The Book of John’ tour began in 2019 following Gilbert’s seven-year break from stand-up.

The Times described it as “Gilbert’s most satisfying show for a decade”.

The remaining dates have been postponed until next year. Tickets are still available on Ticketmaster.
