Amazing news from the USA and the now officially hurricane proof town of Babcock Range, 20 miles from Fort Myers in Florida and frighteningly near the epicentre of Hurricane Ian.

While other towns were severely affected and while two million Floridians lost power, the worst thing that happened in Babcock was a wobbly roof tile and a slightly damaged fence. That’s because the town was built in 2018 and after recent devastating hurricanes, it was built with resilience in mind.

They have their own water supply from a well that can’t be ruined by flooding, all of their power comes from their own solar farm that’s locked down tight, even their internet is hurricane proof and after millions lost power across the state in the wake of Hurricane Ian’s 145 mph winds, Babcock Range didn’t even lose their enviably fast broadband connection. It’s a great example of how architects and engineers are sciencing their way around global heating and climate change.

Inspiring news from the Netherlands and an incredible building that’s just won the award for ‘best New Skyscraper in the World’.

Say hello to the astonishing ‘Valley’ - designed by specialist ‘Dream Project firm’ MVRDV, so called because it mimics a natural valley but in a really cool urban way. Twin towers slope downwards, seemingly covered in lush vegetation and converge on a beautiful valley floor, with more trees and communal gardens.

When you first look at it, you’ll think it was designed by a crazy kid with wonky lego, but closer inspection reveals that each apartment is optimised for privacy, views and outside space.

The design is so complicated and bespoke that it was all done using special and custom made digital programs and the reality is stunning, combining shops, work space, restaurants, cultural facilities, and living space in one phenomenal building complex.

Have a look for yourself and you’ll be amazed.
