Encouraging news from the European Environmental Agency who’ve just published the numbers concerning all of our CO2 targets for 2020 and the stats show an overall drop of 34% since 1990.
We have to be cautious here, there is much to celebrate but we must remember this is an ongoing process and we’ve still got so much to do, but here’s the encouraging part that’ll give us hope: Yes the pandemic really helped our carbon levels but even beforehand, the EU had already reduced its emissions by 26% in 2019 and had achieved its 20% target before the lockdowns started to impact emission levels. This means we are ahead of the curve, but of course it’s a curve that’s easier to bend at the start, when things are really bad.
You might be thinking, that’s great for the EU, but we’re not a part of that anymore, so how are we doing? Good question! We’re still part of the Kyoto Protocol and because we exited the EU in 2020 we’re still a part of this study and you’ll be proud to hear that us and Germany combined accounted for a net 47% drop in CO2. We’re doing great, and we can do better, we can keep pushing and hopefully give future generations the planet they deserve.

Inspiring news from Down Under as an urban forest in New Zealand completely changes the bio-diversity of the whole city!
Say g’day to Zealandia, a forest that’s been planted and thriving just ten minutes from the centre of Wellington and which has demonstrated beautifully that if you re-introduce native forest to cities, then not only do long lost birds return, but they return beyond the forest itself.
Described as an ‘eco-sanctuary’, there are now 40 species of birds in Zealandia, but the most amazing thing is how it’s affected the rest of the city…birds that have not been seen for generations have returned, stayed in Zealandia and now they’ve spread outwards so people are seeing these beautiful creatures in their gardens! Since Zealandia opened in 1999 native bird counts have increased by 50% across the whole city! We know that natural spaces are great for humans physical and mental health, the more awesome they are, the more awe they inspire and the happier people will be!
