Netflix has confirmed that season three of its hit period drama Bridgerton will focus on the love story of Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton.

In the past, the series has followed the books by Julia Quinn, beginning with the love story of Daphne Bridgerton and Simon and moving onto that of Anthony Bridgerton and Kate.

The third book in the series looks at Benedict Bridgerton’s love life, but creators of the show have now revealed they will be focusing on the subject of the fourth book, Penelope Featherington.

The news was announced at Netflix’s NYSEE panel on Sunday (15 May) by Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope in the serie.

Near then end of the panel, she was asked what viewers could expect of the new series, and she replied: "Like Lady Whistledown, I have been keeping a secret for quite some time and I can confirm to you all that season three is Colin and Penelope's love story.

"I have kept that secret since two weeks into season two. This is the first time I am saying it here." (via Hello!)

It is a romance that has been brewing over the two seasons, with Penelope admiring the Bridgerton brother from afar.

She even went as far as to reveal a scandalous secret about her cousin, Marina Thompson, to prevent her marriage to Colin (Luke Newton) in season one.

At the end of the previous season, however, Penelope overheard Colin telling his friends that he could never marry someone like her.

We’ll have to see whether he changes his mind in season three.

This news comes after it was announced the role of Francesca Bridgerton had been recast with Anatomy of a Scandal star Hannah Dodd taking the part. You can read more about that here.
