Actress Helen Mirren knows a thing or two about playing royalty.

The Oscar-winner completely transformed into Queen Elizabeth I for a special performance during the Platinum Jubilee Celebration on Sunday night (15th May)

Helen took part in the historic event, which aired on ITV, as part of the incredible line-up of events marking the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

The star-studded display means Helen is the first person to play both Elizabeth I and Elizabeth II on screen.

Omid Djalili played narrator The Herald, which took viewers through the history of the royal family.

Elizabeth I’s Tilbury Speech and the Gunpowder Plot were part of the acts with Helen, and designed to celebrate the Commonwealth and the four nations of the UK.

Helen donned an incredible gold gown, red wig and pale complexion for the performance, which included the famous speech to the troops at Tilbury.

Phillip Schofield and Julie Etchingham hosted the elaborate celebrations at Windsor Castle, and the likes of Tom Cruise, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, Ant and Dec, Dame Joan Collins and Sir Mo Farah were on hand to mark the historic occasion.

1300 performers and 500 horses appeared across the four acts, all of which were overseen by celeb hosts Damian Lewis, Adjoa Andoh and Alan Titchmarsh.

The star-studded celebrations for the Platinum Jubilee don’t stop there. Ed Sheeran will be at the helm of a musical tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, and will perform outside Buckingham Palace on the 5th June as part of the long-weekend celebrations.

Organisers are calling the event ‘The People’s Pageant’, and David Zolkwer, director of the pageant, said during a press conference (via Vanity Fair): “I'm going to say wait and see. We're not wanting to keep secrets, but we are trying to hold back surprises for the day.”

In a statement, Ed shared: “I am looking forward to performing at The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Pageant in June. I'm proud to be part of the celebration and it's going to be a great opportunity to bring everyone together."

Not only that, but George Ezra will perform at the Platinum Party at the Palace.

The party, broadcast live from Buckingham Palace on the BBC on Saturday 4 June, will be hosted by Kirsty Young and Roman Kemp and will include three stages, 3D projections across the front of the palace and an audience of 10,000 people.
