News that’s give you a warm glow, from France, as a town prepares to light itself using luminous bacteria!
Say bonjour to the people of Rambouillet, just outside Paris, who are going to have the most beautiful, inspiring and sustainable street lighting, thanks to Glowee, a startup that had the balls to take on the EU and ended up getting a development grant off them! You see there is a minimum amount of light that EU streetlights have to emit, and these brilliant tubes of gorgeous blue light generated by bio-luminescent bacteria give only a quarter of a traditional streetlight. BUT, these days, sustainability trumps everything. They’ve asked the powers that be to use this as an opportunity to re-imagine street lighting, to install more lights but make it softer and more pleasing to the eye, and of course to make it completely natural and sustainable. And the EU not only said yes, they’ve given them a grant to pilot the scheme, have a look for yourself, these things are so enchanting!

Good news from here in the UK and results of a study just published that shows you can reduce air pollution in your own home, from as much as 20%, with just a few houseplants!
Say hello to The University Of Birmingham who’ve teamed up with the Royal Horticultural Society to look into how houseplants can clean the air at home or at work. The plant professors monitored levels of nitrogen dioxide, one of the most common pollutants and discovered that over just one hour, any house plant was able to remove at least half of the NO2 in a chamber. They did that in the dark or in the light and it didn’t matter what species they were. Plants are so different in so many ways but they all have a similar effect on pollutants like these. The data was applied to a small badly ventilated office, where five houseplants could improve the NO2 levels by as much as 20%! The bigger the space, just have more plants and you can achieve a similar effect.
