The award-winning actor Jim Carrey has appeared in a lot of films before and since he played The Grinch over twenty years ago.

At the moment, he is gearing up to appear in the latest Sonic movie as Dr. Robotnik, but the actor revealed why he thinks people still gravitate towards his character in The Grinch all these years later.

He said: “Well, it's a classic story of a transformation of a heart, of the bitterest of bitter, and that there's some hope that if they feel loved for even one little moment their heart can grow to 10 times its size, and they can suddenly understand the benefits of loving.

“So, it’s a very sweet story that way, and the character is so off the hook. I'm really like, I'm screaming in that kid's face, you know what I mean? But it's done with love.”

He added: “It's done with a tongue in cheek, and I think the kids love a scary character, as long as it doesn't terrify them to the core. It's they like a grumpy guy. You know, it's like that's fun for them.”

In his most recent project, Carrey is playing another ‘grumpy guy’ that all the kids love- Dr Robotnik.

He initially appeared in the first Sonic movie in 2020 and has now returned to reprise his role in Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

Something the actor loves about playing characters like The Grinch and Dr. Robotnik is seeing how kids react to them.

He joked: “I always look forward to the Halloween costumes.

“I have the good fortune of watching and getting pictures from my friends during Halloween, where people show up as Ace [Ventura], the Grinch, and all these characters, and it's wonderful.”

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is out in cinemas on 1 April 2022.
