If you are still feeling a Game of Thrones-shaped hole in your television viewing, then you’ll be happy to know that a prequel series, House of the Dragon, is not too far away.

The GoT spin-off will take the narrative back to a time 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and will focus on the story of House Targaryen and the Targaryen civil war, which became known as the Dance of the Dragons.

The eagerly anticipated ten-episode series House of the Dragon will launch Monday 22nd August on Sky Atlantic.

News of the release date for House of the Dragon was shared on Sky's Twitter account on March 30th. The post simply showed the tease poster and the caption: “22 August 2022. #HouseoftheDragon”

The show will feature Matt Smith, who will play Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother to King Viserys and heir to the throne. Paddy Considine is King Viserys Targaryen, Steve Toussaint will appear as Lord Corlys Velaryon and Rhys Ifans will play Otto Hightower: the Hand of the King.

Ready Player One’s Olivia Cooke will appear as Otto’s daughter, Alicent Hightower, and Emma D’Arcy plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s first-born child, of pure Valyrian blood, and a dragonrider.

The House of the Dragon is based on the 2018 novel Fire and Blood, by George R. R. Martin.

Earlier this month, the writer enthused about the upcoming series in a blog post, saying: “What I have seen, I have loved. I am eager to see more.”

Zai Bennett, Managing Director of Content, Sky UK, said: “House of the Dragon is one of the most highly anticipated shows of the year and it showcases Sky’s commitment to providing exciting, world-class content for our customers. If you loved Game of Thrones or are a first timer to the world of Westeros, this is going to be a must watch. Roll on Monday 22nd August.”

House Of The Dragon will launch Monday 22nd August on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW.
