There was a Geordie takeover on ITV on Saturday evening, as Sam Fender closed Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway with a performance of the ultimate Newcastle anthem.

Appearing as a special guest for the End Of The Show Show, the singer-songwriter belted out a cover of Mark Knopfler’s Local Hero. Any football supporters watching will have recognised the track as the music that Newcastle United run out to at home matches at St James’ Park.

Before Fender sang the classic track from the Dire Straits man as the credits rolled, he performed one of his own compositions, smashing through the title-track from his latest album, Seventeen Going Under, in front of an excited studio audience.

Whilst the musician played the tune, Ant and Dec got up to their comedy shenanigans, racing through corridors trying to make it to the gig, and watching social media clips of the show’s celebrity guest announcer, Richard E Grant, having a lovely old time in the crowd.

Eventually, Ant and Dec plugged in the stage lights and let off confetti cannons as Fender’s tune reached its climax. You can watch it here:

Then, as Fender played Local Hero on Saturday's show (March 12th), fans took to social media to heap praise on the Georgie artist.

One Newcastle fan wrote: “Fantastic Ant and Dec show tonight ending with Sam Fender and his band playing Local Hero .So proud to be a Geordie #NUFC”

Another commenter said: “Sam Fender and the band playing Local hero on Saturday night takeaway, canny!”

Someone else wrote: “As a Geordie, you have to love Sam Fender partying with Ant and Dec as his band plays Local Hero to close out #SaturdayNightTakeaway.”
