Frustrated at the state of the roads near his house, Sir Rod Stewart has grabbed a shovel and is dealing with the matter himself.

The music legend has posted a video to social media, showing him in a high-vis jacket, fixing up his local area. The clip, which he shared on Instagram, reads: “Working for a living, filling holes is good for the soul!”

In the video, the artist says: “I’m repairing the street where I live as no one can be bothered to do it.”

In another clip, he said: “This is the state of the road near where I live in Harlow and it’s been like this for ages. People are bashing their cars up. The other day, there was an ambulance with a burst tyre. My Ferrari can’t go through here at all!”

He added: “So me and the boys thought we would come and do it ourselves. We are filling the holes while millions and millions of pounds have been spent on the M11.”

Commenters were quick to praise Sir Rod. One said: “Legend Rod! That road is a nightmare!!! Appreciate it.”

Virgin Radio’s very own Amy Voce referenced one of the singer’s classic tunes, when talking about his attire. “You wear it well Rod…” she said.

Someone else joked: “Don't hurt yourself I got tickets to see you in June.”

However, not everyone was as enthusiastic about Rod’s DIY antics. Essex County Council cabinet member Lee Scott told the BBC: “People must always report potholes to the council and we will fix anything that's dangerous.”

Mr Scott said he would “endeavour to rectify it”, adding “all road repairs have to be done to a professional level or the person doing it could become liable for any problems or accidents".

Sir Rod will be putting down the shovel and picking up a microphone soon, as he is due to hit the road (hopefully without encountering any potholes) on a US and UK tour from June.
