There are few food items as tricky to buy as avocados. When in the shop, you carefully inspect them, trying to find some that are neither too hard nor too soft, and then, when you get them home, their perfect window of ripeness seems to only last for nanoseconds.

Rarely do you cut your avo in half to find it to be beautifully green and perfectly textured. What normally happens is, you either leave it too late and end up with mushy, discoloured mess, or you take a risk on an one that you think *might* be ready to eat, only to discover that it is harder than granite when you cut into it.

The good news then, is that a Facebook user is here with a hack that will hopefully extend the lifespan of your avocados, meaning you have much longer to use them.

The Facebook user has suggested keeping avocados in a bowl of water in the fridge. This, apparently, makes them last longer by slowing down the activity of microbes that cause decay.

Water prevents oxidation, which usually causes the tasty green flesh of an avocado to go that unappealing grey-brown colour as it ages.

The Facebook post from a South Carolina resident called Lisa Couch Williams reads: “Avocado lovers, sit down because I’m about to change your life. Did y’all already know this?? Avocados stay good for-freaking-ever if you put them in water in the fridge.”

Sharing some photos with the post, she continued: “These have been in here for two whole dang weeks while the control group on the countertop rotted. They’re perfect. I’m speechless.”

The Facebook user added: “If y’all knew and didn’t tell me imma be BIG MAD.”

Safe to say, we did not know this!

Of course, delaying the ripening of your avos is only half the battle. What about if they are too hard and you want to speed things along so you can eat them sooner? Well, in that case, Lifehacker suggests placing one in a paper bag with a piece of fruit. The fruit produces ethylene gas, which means your avocados will ripen much faster.

So there you have it. Hopefully, one way or another, these tips will help you get your avocados perfectly ripe whenever you want them!
