As this year’s Great British Bake Off approaches the half-way point, it’s getting harder and harder to say goodbye to the contestants, and viewers were especially disappointed as the latest baker left the show last night.

Obviously there are episode five spoilers ahead.

Tuesday’s show saw the first-ever German Week, where the bakers were asked to make traditional German biscuits in the first challenge, before they had to produce torte cakes in the technical. Their showstoppers were tiered cakes.

Whilst you would expect Jurgen to triumph in German week, it was actually Italian Giuseppe who won Star Baker. Jurgen also did well though, and received a Hollywood handshake after impressing during the signature challenge.

At the other end of the scale, George and Freya struggled, and it was the show’s youngest contestant who lost her place, having failed to impress judges Paul and Prue with her vegan offerings.

In a letter to Bake Off fans, the 19-year-old said: “I feel genuinely blessed to have had the chance to share my love of vegan baking with the world. If I have inspired just one person to give being vegan a go, that is more of a success to me than winning.”

Freya’s fans were very unhappy with the result, with some saying that George should have gone instead, after he served up raw dough.

One person wrote on Twitter: “Can't believe she went home when George had raw cake!”

Another added: “Aww so sorry Freya you were our favourite, such a talented young lady, so well done. Sorry but we don’t agree with the result, a couple not as good as Freya are still there !!!

Someone else agreed, saying: “I can't believe I'm actually objecting to a cake competition but no way was Freya bottom this week.”

The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4 with Pastry Week.

Get ready for some soggy bottoms!
