Good news for home-decorating enthusiasts, Changing Rooms is back on the telly after 17 years! However, this might not necessarily be good news for the people who are actually taking part in the show, as was illustrated in the opening episode of the new series last night.
The revamped show has found a new home on Channel 4, after being a big hit on the BBC between 1996 and 2004, and is now presented by Anna Richardson from Naked Attraction. It still features Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, as well as new designer duo Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead. Meanwhile, 2021’s version of Handy Andy is Tibby Singh.
In the first episode in Swansea, Jordan and Russell were ‘helping’ homeowner Lisa decorate her house. It’s safe to say, however, that some of their decorating ideas were slightly unusual. One section of wall, for instance, was given a makeover to include long blonde hair hanging from it!
At first, Lisa said that the makeover was "amazing", but after noticing her new hairy wall, she said: “It’s not that I don’t like it.. I just would never think of putting hair on a… thing.”
Social media obviously went crazy about the wall of hair. One person said: “Watching the new Changing Rooms and they're making a hair wall. This is incredible. Awful. The worst thing ever. I love it”
Someone else said: “I'd absolutely never let these people near my house."
Another person joked: “Surprise!!! Here is your 'wall of hair' you’ve always dreamed of in your bedroom.”
Elsewhere on Twitter, another commenter wrote: “Ummm nothing says glam and sophistication than a stapled in ratty polyester hair weave.”
Meanwhile, in her review, Lucy Mangan from The Guardian described it as “the most viscerally horrible piece of homemade “art” I have ever seen.”
Whilst he wasn’t responsible for the hair wall, the return of Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen was also causing quite a reaction online. One viewer said: “Laurence is awesome.”
Another Twitter user wrote: “I simply cannot imagine that anxiety of knowing that Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen was in my house.”
Someone else commented: “I could never physically manifest what my nightmares look like… but Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen always seems to pull it off with his designs.”
The new series of Changing Rooms will run on Channel 4 for six episodes.
