The Queen of Pop is the latest celebrity to throw her support behind Britney Spears, comparing her conservatorship to slavery and calling it a “violation of human rights”.

Britney has been under a conservatorship, which controls her life and her finances, since 2008, with her father Jamie being a co-conservator. The legal agreement sees a judge appoint a person or organisation to care for another adult who it is deemed cannot care for themself or manage their own finances.

Last month Britney called in court for the conservatorship to be terminated, saying she was forced to work, and claiming that she is not permitted to remove her IUD to enable her to have a baby, and that she is not allowed to marry her boyfriend, Sam Asghari.

She said, “I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry it’s insane. And I’m depressed. I cry every day.”

The conservatorship has sparked a widespread #FreeBritney movement, with celebs such as Mariah Carey, Cher, Miley Cyrus, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake already showing their support to Britney. Now pop icon Madonna has taken to Instagram with a vociferous post about the conservatorship.

Over a picture of herself in a Britney T-shirt, she wrote, “Give this woman her life back. Slavery was abolished so long ago! Death to the greedy patriarchy that has been doing this to women for centuries. This is a violation of human rights! Britney we coming to get you out of jail!”

Britney and Madonna famously kissed onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003, and joined forces on single Me Against the Music in the same year.

The next hearing in Britney’s conservatorship case is due to take place on July 14.
