The government has announced a new law, banning touts from bulk-buying tickets.

Under the Digital Economy Act, it is now a criminal offence to use software to purchase large amounts of tickets to then be sold on for a profit. Musicians such as Ed Sheeran, Adele and You Me At Six's Josh Franceschi have previously spoken out on the issue, which has been known to see ticket prices hiked up to thousands of pounds, preventing real fans from attending gigs.

Bots currently allow touts to exceed the maximum number of tickets to purchase, so that they can sell them on third-party websites at significantly more than the face value.

Matt Hancock, the minister for the creative industries, said: “We’re determined to make sure 2018 is the year we help real fans get the chance to see their favourite music and sports stars at a fair price.".

There will be no limit on the penalty fine for anyone found to be breaking the new law.
