Call the Midwife star Helen George has made it clear she was never planning on leaving the series.

The fan-favourite actress who has starred as Trixie in the BBC One historical-drama since its very first series in 2012 was rumoured to be bringing her time on the show to an end earlier this year.

However, despite Trixie’s storyline with her husband Matthew (Olly Rix) ending series 13 with the latter leaving the show, George is set to return for Call the Midwife’s upcoming Christmas special, and series 14 too.

Speaking exclusively with virginradio.co.uk at the National Television Awards earlier this month, the actress opened up about how excited she was to be back on set playing one of Poplar’s famous Nonnatus House team once more.

“It’s bigger than ever,” she said, describing series 14, adding: “And I guess it’s quite a return for Trixie, because she’s coming back sans-husband, so that’s an interesting twist.”

Asked if she’d considered stepping away from the series as had been rumoured, George said: “I was always planning to come back.”

The actress has been sure to enjoy the show’s annual break from filming, as she also explained: “We’ve had a lovely summer break… I’ve been doing lots of travelling and spending time with my friends, so that’s been fun.”

However, reuniting with the cast to continue filming series 14 has also been a delight. “It’s really nice being back with the girls and being back with the ladies at Nonnatus House,” she continued, teasing what’s to come for Trixie now that Matthew has departed for America.

“Trixie has been brought back into the fold, which is really fun, and where she kind of sits best, I think,” the actress added.

Call the Midwife will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Christmas. Series 14 will begin airing in early 2025.
