With the second season of Lord of the Rings prequel series The Rings of Power having landed on Prime Video this month, Rory Kinnear has spoken about joining the hit series.

The actor, who plays Tom Bombadil, exclusively told virginradio.co.uk at the world premiere in London: “What's so nice about joining a series when it's up and running, it's quite hard work to establish characters and establish storylines, and that is obviously the first three or four episodes of any series. And I know writers are particularly thrilled when they get a second series, because that means that the relationships can really begin to sing and to fly.

“So coming in as a newbie, but working with someone with - all my stuff was mainly with Daniel [Weyman] who plays The Stranger - working with someone who knew it inside out and knew the ropes and was able to take me through it, it made it quite easy for me, I think.”

Regrading playing a character that has so many fan expectations, the Penny Dreadful star told us: “I was aware of the amount of people that were interested in how this was going to be brought to life. But I guess I had to just try and find my own response to the source material as well as what [series creators] JD [Payne] and Patrick [McKay] were creating and using with him as well.

“So in some ways, it was like any other job. And then this bit becomes unlike many other jobs, when you realise how many people are interested.”

And on working with other members of the cast, Rory told us about one particular star. “Other than Daniel, I mainly only ever worked with a little lamb who stole - I can only imagine - every single scene that she appeared in. She was a superb actress, and I hope to be working with her for the rest of my career!”

In season two of The Rings of Power, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will.”

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is available to view on Prime Video, with new episodes airing weekly.
