McDonald & Dodds stars give promising update on show future

McDonald & Dodds stars Tala Gouveia and Jason Watkins have shared their enthusiasm for making many more seasons of their beloved murder-mystery show.

The stars - who recently returned to our TV screens as DCI Lauren McDonald (Gouveia) and DS Dodds (Watkins) for the detective drama’s fourth series - were speaking with RadioTimes.com when they revealed they’d come back for many more seasons if the drama is renewed.

“I think 10 is a nice number,” Gouveia joked, but she later added: “[But] if the ideas are still there and the drive is still there and the audience is still there, then I think it could last a long time.”

What’s important to the actress and “what felt really apparent with season 4" is "that people are just striving to make [every season] the best it can be."

She continued: “If that energy continued, then I think it could have longevity and still be really enjoyable,” again hinting that perhaps a future series 10 might not be so far fetched after all.

Gouveia criticised: “It’s when people get complacent and think ‘Oh, we can just bash it out’ - that’s when a series has to stop. And also, when the stories stop.”

Watkins concurred with his co-star’s views on the longevity of the show, adding: “I think it’s right that we're not complacent about it. We're very fortunate to have got four series and I think the reaction from audiences all over the world now is starting to build.

“You know that there's an audience for us and they're really appreciating the things that we're offering them - and that's all you want really, isn't it? To spread a bit of joy and a bit of intrigue and maybe hold the mirror up to nature a little bit.”

He added that he sees the whole McDonald & Dodds team as “as very fortunate” to have found that supportive viewership in the UK and in other countries such as the US which have also broadcast the show.

While ITV have yet to reveal whether a fifth series is on the way for the Bath-set drama, viewers, cast and crew alike are no doubt keeping their fingers crossed that the detective drama will be revealed to be returning some time soon.
