Coronation Street star Jodie Prenger has shared her heartbreak about Corrie icon Helen Worth’s departure.
The Gail Rodwell actress revealed earlier this month that 2024 would be her final year starring on the show, as she has decided to step down from her role after a golden 50 years on screen.
Speaking with virginradio.co.uk at the 2024 TRIC Awards, musical theatre and TV star Prenger shared how she was “really, really gutted” when she heard the news that Worth would be stepping down from her longstanding role in the soap.

“I’d not been in for a bit and heard the news… I’m really upset because I shared a table with her in the greenroom, and she’s lovely and grounded and everything you wanted a Corrie legend to be,” Prenger added.
The I’d Do Anything reality TV star began starring as Glenda Shuttleworth in Corrie in 2022, and has been loving the experience so far.
“I’d always wanted to be in Corrie, it was always my massive, massive bucket list [dream],” she revealed at Tuesday (25th June)’s star-studded event. “I would have camped outside of Corrie probably… so many people championed me to get in so I’ve finally got there, and I don’t know what to do with myself now!”
Thinking about how stars like Helen paved the way for characters like her own in soap dramas, the actress added: “She’s one of these iconic women that have paved the way for other women to kind of come and surround her [in the soap]...
“She’ll be a great loss,” Prenger reflected, “But we can carry the torch for her.”
In some good news for dedicated Corrie viewers, the actress also shared her belief that fellow fan-favourite and Coronation Street stalwart Sue Nicholls (Audrey) will be staying on the show, despite some suggesting she might leave with her onscreen daughter Gail.
“Oh I think she’ll stay!” Prenger added, before gushing about how much she loves hanging out with all the Corrie cast behind the scenes. “I wish you could buy a Corrie Street greenroom [experience] and just have a cup of tea with them.
“They’re lovely. Dead normal, dead grounded. No airs or graces… I expected some divas, but it’s not- it’s just a lovely place to be.”
Coronation Street picked up two awards at the TRIC Awards 2024, with Maureen Lipman winning Best Soap Actor and the show as a whole winning Best Soap.
