He shared two pictures of her on his Instagram story, one of her in the film and one of her as an adult.

Travolta captioned the tribute: "Susan you made Grease that much more special! We will miss you!"

The news of her passing was shared by Susan's publicist, Melissa Berthier: “Susan died peacefully on May 2 surrounded by loved ones."

Samantha Mansfield, Susan's daughter, has also paid tribute to her mother and "best friend", telling People magazine: "The light she brought into every room will be missed forever.

"She was magic, and I was very lucky to call her my best friend."

As well as starring in Grease, Susan had been a beauty queen and a singer and dancer.

In addition to playing the cheerleader, she also appeared in films including Police Academy 6: City Under Siege and Wes Craven's Deadly Blessing.

Susan also appeared on the small screen on The Love Boat and The Amazing Howard Hughes.

She stepped away from acting in the 1980s to raise her family, before going on to teach dance and direct childen's theatre.
