Margot Robbie has criticised the “knee-jerk reaction” which gets people wanting sequels to films such as her summer blockbuster success Barbie.
Speaking to Variety about her production company LuckyChap Entertainment which produced the Greta Gerwig directed film, Robbie suggested they have no plans for a Barbie 2 just yet.
“It's funny, that knee-jerk reaction in this day and age for everyone to immediately ask about a sequel,” she began. “I don't think it was like that 20 years ago. [Barbie] wasn't designed to be a trilogy.”
The Barbie actress admitted: "Everything went into 'Barbie' – and that's how Greta works. She finishes every movie on empty, feeling like she could never make another movie because she put everything she had into that one. So I don't know what it would take to fill that cup up again for her. Or for us."
The actress’ comments cast doubt on previous rumours that a Barbie sequel is already in early development, although it’s possible studios are still looking into the idea despite the fact neither Robbie nor Gerwig have their own plans just yet.
Looking to the future of LuckyChap’s own future projects, Robbie explained: “We want to make more films that have the effect that 'Barbie' has. I don't know if it has to be 'Barbie 2'.
“Why can't it be another big, original, bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to do that."
Robbie’s comments confirm Greta Gerwig’s own when she spoke to The New York Times about the success of Barbie last summer. “At this moment, [the first film is] all I’ve got, she said. "I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea, and everything I've ever wanted to do, I did.”
She added: “I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream, but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.
Barbie is now available to buy in stores and on streaming.
