Scientists in Seattle have made an impressive breakthrough in the design of pacemakers. Get this, a pacemaker that’s able to charge itself, from the beat of the heart it’s in!
Granted it will only charge around 10% of the power it needs, but this is just the beginning and even 10% over the lifetime of one of these life saving gadgets, 10% is a lot and extends the life of a battery which means less risky invasive surgery to get it in there.
It’s a wireless device that’s so small it can comfortably fit in the right ventricle and uses similar technology to the way hybrid cars can convert kinetic energy into electricity. One day we’ll have a wireless charging plate in our mattress that can charge this thing while we sleep but until then we have this little charm that will extend the life of a pacemaker by years.

A lovely story from the UK that starts in London in the mid 1930s when Malcolm Stern’s dad bought a banana yellow Talbot Darracq motorcar for himself and his family.
Malcolm still has a black and white picture of himself as a boy in 1937, sitting on the running board of this magnificent beast, blissfully unaware that only a matter or 2-3 years later Malcolm would be moved out of London in the Blitz and that was the last he’d see of the much loved family car.
Now in his 90’s Malcolm was looking for a hobby and fancied the idea of making a scale model of this car, so he set about finding one so he could measure it up. In an amazing stroke of luck he found his dad’s actual car, number plate and all, up for sale and in much need of restoration.
So he decided, with his son’s help, to buy the car and, during the pandemic, set about restoring it to its former glory. Now, three years and a lot of elbow grease later, the Talbot looks brand new and it’s a glorious family heirloom that gets huge smiles from vintage car enthusiasts :)
