Impressive news from China as we meet the haulage company who are 24 million miles ahead of Tesla.

So Elon Musk, the man who ruined Twitter, has been promising autonomous driving vehicles for years, but his setbacks have been, well, numerous and embarrassingly well documented. Whereas China’s leading autonomous tech company in the heavy goods vehicle sector announced this week that it crossed the 40 million kilometre threshold without incident or accident. Founded by a super clever Chinese engineer who studied in Australia, to say that the Inceptio Autonomous Driving System is miles ahead of Elon is a bit like saying an iPhone is miles ahead of two fizzy drink cans joined by string. These bad boys can drive all night without white-line fever or fatigue, and their clever algorithms optimise fuel consumption, reducing use by as much as 7% compared to humans. Plus they don’t shout lewd comments to girls in miniskirts.

A while back I told you about super white paint that could help cool homes in hot countries without the need for, or for people who can’t afford, air conditioning.

Now say namaste to an awesome non profit organisation in India called Mahila Housing Trust, they give poor people in the Thar Desert in Rajasthan cans of ultra white solar reflecting paint, they paint their roofs with it and it lowers the temperature of their houses by as much as 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit  (that’s 4 C). They’re essentially a charity that’s installed this simple but literally brilliant feature on over 30,000 homes in the region and they help send a phenomenal amount of solar radiation back into space. When the summer temperature can reach 48 degrees in these slums, this simple solution can mean the difference between sickness or work, even life and death. The fascinating thing would be to quantify how much the world temperature could cool if everybody in every hot country painted their roof white.
