The husband of Coronation Street actress Julie Goodyear has confirmed the star has been diagnosed with dementia.

In a statement released Wednesday (7th June), husband Scott Brand told fans: “My darling wife and I have had to come to terms with this heart-breaking diagnosis.

“Unfortunately, Julie has been suffering forgetfulness for some time and we have been seeking medical advice and assistance, but we now know that there is no hope of a reversal in the situation – and that her condition will get progressively, and perhaps speedily, worse.”

He continued: “We have taken the decision to publicly announce the diagnosis as Julie still loves visiting friends and eating out. Inevitably she is recognised, and fans love to meet her - and she them - but she can get confused particularly if she is tired. I hope people will understand.”

Scott then confirmed that Julie will remain as a patron of the Willow Wood Hospice in Greater Manchester.

Julie is best know for playing Bet Lynch on ITV’s Coronation Street, first appearing in 1966 before becoming a series regular from 1970 until 1995.

Bet was known for her glamorous style and hairstyles, bringing the beehive look and voluminous hair-dos to the Rovers Return as a barmaid and eventually as landlady.

Julie received a Special Recognition Award for her role at the 1995 National Television Awards, and was made an MBE in 1996’s New Year Honours. After her depature, the actress then returned to the Cobbles for a string of episodes in 2002 and 2003.

Outside of Corrie, Julie has appeared in shows including Lily Savages’ Blankety Blank, I’m Famous and Frightened!, Celebrity Fit Club and Celebrity Big Brother.

Coronation Street wasn’t the only soap Julie starred in, as she also took a role in Channel 4’s Hollyoaks as Mrs Temple in 2006.
