Ahead of the release of the hotly-anticipated new Barbie film, its star has admitted that she thought it would "never see the light of day".
The movie is due to land this summer, and will see the Australian actor play the titular character alongside Ryan Gosling’s Ken. It is directed by Lady Bird’s Greta Gerwig, who also wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach.
In a video interview with Bafta, former Neighbours star Robbie spoke about her initial thoughts upon receiving the script. “The first time I read the Barbie script, my reaction was, ‘Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day because they are never going to let us make this movie.’ But they did,” she said.
The Wolf of Wall Street actor kept her cards close to her chest when it came to revealing anything about what we can expect from the narrative of Barbie. When asked if she could say anything else, she said: “Can’t tell ya,” while mimicking zipping her lips.
What we do know, from the official synopsis, is that a doll living in Barbieland is expelled for “not being perfect enough” and therefore sets off on an adventure in the real world.
Along with the two lead actors, the stellar cast includes the likes of Will Ferrell, Helen Mirren, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Connor Swindells, Michael Cera, Dua Lipa, Nicola Coughlan and Ncuti Gatwa. The latter was recently named the most powerful person on British TV.
The movie is set to land on 21st July, and an excellent new trailer landed last week.
“I thought I might stay over tonight. Because we’re girlfriend and boyfriend,” Ken says in the teaser.
“To do what?” Barbie responds.
Ken admits: “I’m actually not sure.”
